The blue suitcase

One of the passions of the late George Cassuto Izn (1929 - 1996), my fathers younger brother was, to inquire into the history of the Dutch Cassuto's.
All his research resulted in a growing, often surprising view on the history of the family, about which he could elaborate so grippingly. The result in material respect was a chaotic bunch of papers, notices, correspondances, extracts from administrative and congregational registers, hypotheses about descent, surmised pedigrees, often jotted down on scraps of paper etc..
All this has been put in a small, hard covered blue suitcase, which I have temporarily at my disposal and which I'm busy sorting out.
A large part of the family Cassuto site taps on his research and is therefore dedicated to this real family man: George Henricus Cassuto Izn.

Up till now the following items are offered:

  • Italian roots. Some lines about the Cassuto wanderings in the Mediterranean, the origins in Italy and a sketchy survey of the Italian forebears
(also about Jewish Italy on jewishgen.org and italian-family-history.com )
  • pedigree 1750 - today The somewhat mysterious Ephraim Cassuto seemed to have established himself in Amsterdam around the midst of the 18th century. From him on the line of descendants becomes clearer. On this page the male line from Ephraim until today.
  • Cassuto's in Amsterdam ca 1850, a survey derived from the Amsterdam town archive
  • a survey of ancestors to (great)grandfather Isaac(1885) and his wife Caroline(1889), which includes also the female line up till plm. 1810. Included are some old pictures.

Where does the name come from and who are Cassuto's of more or less reknown? Go for this to the Cassuto name page....
